For my EDCI 336 free inquiry project, I’m going to learn a skill I’ve always been curious about: photography and photo editing using GIMP software. I have been particularly interested in learning to take photos of people. This is because I have a passion for snapping photos of flowers, and of course humans are just as lovely as subjects as flowers 🙂 ! I have also spent some time being in front of the camera, so I would like to see what its like getting behind it and snapping some shots of some lovely friends and family.

My first photography passion, flower shots! Pictured is Prunella vulgaris, common name “self-heal” or “heal-all” for its medicinal properties.

Learning how to snap a well-framed, well-lit shot is just one component of the learning process which I intend to embark on. My plan is to also experiment with image editing to learn skills such as enhancing lighting, general touch up, increasing focus on the subject, and also adding neat effects to photos such as double exposure or dual lighting effects.

In terms of the style of photography I intend to learn, I would like to try portraits, headshots, and creative photography. I got myself a new DSLR camera, and a photographer friend of mine has given me some of his equipment and some tips to get me started. I’m very excited to share my learning journey .. thanks for reading!

My friend Chris took a photo of me on my first creative photography attempt, snapping my friend Viv! On my next post I’ll be sharing the result!
